The poll question is: What is your favorite thing about high school football?
Okay, so the first outing for the Houston Co. Lions was not very successful against the Ashford Yellow
Jackets, but it was a sign that we have several talented members on this team that can compete against bigger teams. Yes, losing 41-18 was not good, but several key plays kept us in the game until the last quarter. That being said, this blog is just my way of not only keeping up with the Lions, but to also make a few of my own predicitions of the other local high school games going on around us this year, as well as make my predictions of Alabama, Auburn, Troy and UAB games. Hey, we gotta share the love! So, included each week will be a poll that I hope you will participate in as well leave your comments and spread the good news that someone is keeping up with what's going on. Feedback is not required, but will be appreciated! I hope you all enjoy this format and the upcoming football season! Go out and support your local team as this helps support the school! So.....here we go!!!
Week 1 High School
We'll begin with the 6A guys first
Enterprise v. Sidney Lanier
Well, being that Enterprise is playing on their new field, I think the Wildcats will be tough to handle. Adversity tends to make one stronger, and with all that the Wildcats have been through and the fact that they are coming off a great season, I'm going with Enterprise in this contest.
Northview v. Rehobeth
Rehobeth is rebounding from a year that I'm sure they would soon like to forget. Northview struggled as well last year, so this game is a good way for them to kick off the season. I'm giving the nod to the Cougars of Northview.
5A
Carroll v. Andalusia
Okay, I have to be honest here, I know more about Carroll than I do Andalusia, soooooo......this one will go to Carroll.
Charles Henderson v. Beauregard
After the performance against Pike Co. in their jamboree game, I think Charles Henderson will pull this one out....my vote....Charles Henderson
Eufaula v. Abbeville
This should be an interesting game. Both teams are known to be powerhouses that can dominate a game if given the opportunity. The team that has the edge in this game will be Eufaula.
4A
Headland v. Dale County
A early rivalry game, this game has the potential to be wildly entertaining. The team that can jump out early, keep the lead and make the least mistakes, hold the key to being victorious ( yes, i know that seems obvious, but it's harder to actually do than say) so, I'm going to give the nod here to the Headland Rams.
3A
Daleville v. Bullock County
Well, I'll tell ya, I think I'm going to have to go with Daleville here. Enough said.
Geneva v. Straughn
The Panthers are always a threat to come out of the gate running, and yes, I admit, knowing little about Straughn, I think I'll go with Geneva here.
Opp v. Elba
Elba is returning from a year that saw them go well into the state playoffs, only to lose to Washington Co.. Elba is a strong, young team that will very well return to the playoffs. Opp is a young team as well, and could benefit from a win over the Elba Tigers, but in the end, I'm going with Elba to win this one.
Pike County v. Notasulga
Pike Co. is working on returning to the top of the 3A standings this year and reclaim a state title. Notasulga, well, honestly, I have no idea., but I think that the team to come out on top in this one, Notasulga.
2A Region 2
New Brockton v. Providence Christian
Providence Christian moves up to 2A this year after being rather successful in 1A. Being in competition with the other 2A schools could prove to be a very steep hill to climb for the Eagles. Their first challenge will be facing the Gamecocks of New Brockton. If Providence is successful, it would certainly boost their confidence for the rest of the year, but I think New Brockton can put up the numbers in order to take the win.
Samson v. Florala
With both teams coming off of a 1-9 season, each team is looking to start this year with some momentum to carry them through the rest of the year. Samson gets the nod here.
Zion Chapel v. Pleasant Home
Zion Chapel could make this a contest, but not being completely aware of Pleasant Home, I'm giving the nod to Zion Chapel.
2A Region 3
Ariton v Kinston
If last year's game tells you anything, Ariton won 35-32, well, then hold on to your hat....this could be another barn burner. I've seen Kinston early on in jamboree and if they play with the tenacity they did in the jamboree, they could win. Give the nod to Kinston.
Barbour Co. v. Stewart Co. (Ga.)
The Jags beat Stewart Co. a year ago 16-0, and the Jags are returning several key players. I think the Jags could be a team to contend with in the 2A area. Give the win to Barbour Co.
Houston Academy v. Montgomery Academy
It's well known that graduation was not kind to HA, leaving only two returning starters from a team that gave many area teams a run for their money last year. If HA can get a win here, it would be a boost to a team who must face a schedule of foes looking to get revenge from last year. The nod here goes to Houston Academy.
Wicksburg v. Geneva County
Like Providence, Wicksburg makes the leap into 2A territory. But the Panthers begin their season against 1A foe, Geneva County, a team coming off a 7-4 season. Wicksburg could be an early threat to most teams in the area, but I think the Bulldogs will come on top here. The win goes to Geneva County.
AISA
Lakeside v. Springwood School
With Lakeside returning several key starters, the Chiefs should avenge last year's lost to Springwood. Give the win to the Chiefs.
Okay, that's my calls for the week. Keep in mind I may "tweak" the format over the next several weeks in order to keep it short and sweet. Again, feedback is always welcome! Next week I'll include the upcoming college games. So, if you want your opinion known, email me at agwade1@rocketmail.com
